Habitable Planets

We spent a lot of our day today updating our habitable planets with unique features such as domes, tree houses, volcanoes etc. We were also thinking how we could make our rockets fly further for longer by adjusting things like the nose cones (adding weight), parachutes, as well as adding length to some rockets. We will see if these adaptations work on Wednesday. We are looking forward to sharing our creative learning with our families and friends in the last week of term.

Fin, Charlie and Maniah are working superbly together
Simone's group's planet has a township on the top already
Sam's group has a couple of domes on their planet
This tree house will look fabulous when it is attached
Roi's group's volcano has awesome detail
Maddox has been painting detail onto his group's rocky planet
This group's planet already has a lot of added features
Greta and Brodey making adjustments to their parachute
Noah adding detail to the group's small planet
Hugh and Annabel painting the background of their planet
Mountains coming to life
Leroy's theory is the longer the rocket, the further it will fly...

Paper Quilling - Friday Art

Last Friday the Year 5 students were introduced to paper quilling.

Paper quilling is the art of cutting paper into long thin strips, rolling and pinching the pieces into different shapes, and then gluing the shapes together to form decorative art. Paper quilling projects can be used to decorate cards, boxes, gift bags, picture frames, or even be made into 3D stand-alone art pieces.

The Year 5's were spilt into boys and girls and together they created the world map based on these two pieces of art -

The Year 5's working hard on their creation...

The Year 5 boys creation - the Year 6 boys took over this week.

The Year 5 girls creation - the Year 6 girls took over this week.

This week it was the Year 6's turn....

SMart Touch 2020 Term 4

If your child is interested in playing Touch this year and they already have a team organised they can sign up using the website www.sporty.co.nz/smarttouch

If they do not have a team you can use the sheet below to help organise a team. Students who do not have a team can also record their name on the sign up sheet outside our class.

Amazing Writers

This morning R14 had a short writing session where they focused on using powerful language and writing in complete sentences that use commas. Please leave a comment below as feedback.

Simone

Split apart for eternity, a punishment from the Gods. Longing for some company, she turned to her love.

Maddox

Mountains and rivers join forces, hoping there is more out there to see.

Max

Oceans rage in fear, each one with abandoned souls. Lightning thumps on the sea's surface.

Sam

As wrath joins together creating everything. Destroying life, opening death.

Leroy

People get a new life, leaving what once was death and despair, life of evil. Now stand in the battlefield of peace, a reminder of the past.

Chloe

As they whisper, shadows appear creating a new path. They join thoughts and link minds.

Isla

A raging jewel of waves crash through an abyss of anger and hate, dragging happiness into a prison of despair. Magnifying life's purpose. Death...

Samuel

Storm. Nothing can break it, it hits with power and will not stop until the enemy is dead.

Quinn

As a tranquil scene turns vicious, the blue sky disappears, taking the sun with it.

Teagan

The empty souls caress the waves, as all life falls below.

Daria

Waves crash in the unforgiving winds, the sun is too scared to come out from its hiding place. The most miserable shade of grey, every little creature safe, hiding away in its home, not daring to come out.

Joseph

The waves clash, hoping to steal the light, and feed it to the earth's soul. Clouds loomed overhead, eating up the sky. The waves grew angry, ricochetting off each other, and then, there was silence.

Fin

It was a dark, gloomy night with the waves destroying anything in its path, like a hurricane.

Arya

They begin to fight, death looming between them, waiting to strike. Their essence of life fades away as their souls perish, giving up all hope.

Louis

A feisty gust of wind carries the waves frantically, expressing the dark clouds.

Hugo

The wrath of time. Death lies here, hope does too, one ray of light descends, it shall be, it will be, it can be, and nothing shall stop it, not even the anger of mankind.

Rosa

In an enchanted wood, a solitary tree sits lost in time. Its visions of the treacherous past surround it. In the heart of this oak, lies secrecy and greed.

Greer

I start to feel calmer, I fall. My brain stops, everything makes sense, its like a puzzle when you find the last piece.

Levi

Two unknown faces, staring into green eyes, dark clouds to bring their fear upon you.

Maddy

The sun punches the water that long ago lost its sanity, walking in is immediate suicide.

Ayana

Dark clouds merge, forming a storm, there under the surface there is not fear, but something... more serene.

Tom

The waves clash, fighting among the darkening sky, raging a constant war, but revealing a shape, a shape of fire.

Hugh

The clouds envelope the sky. Sunlight fades away as they stare deep into each others eyes, trying to predict their next move.

Aerodynamics

This afternoon we learnt all about Newton's second law; F=ma (force = mass X acceleration)

We tried this out with paper planes and our three winners for distance were Joseph,  Louis and Tom.

We then began making our first rockets, including fins and nose cones. We talked about finding the centre of gravity and the centre of pressure. Check out some of our progress.

Our budding engineers are having a blast!

Fractions in Action

This morning I heard language like

  • "What is the highest common factor?"
  • "We can't simplify that any further."
  • "That is an equivalent amount."
R14 were working with a Maths buddy on some fractions tasks. Check out the wonderful collaborative learning on display.

Our first launch

Over the past three weeks we have had engineers Kyle and Duncan join us on a Wednesday afternoon to present the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge.

Today Kyle introduced us to Isaac Newton's laws of motion.

Newton's first law

An object will remain at rest (not moving) or keep moving forever at the same speed and in a straight line unless there is another force acting on it.

We also looked at the different forces that would be applied to our bottle rockets:
